Awake late, in a far off land, experiencing the standard midnight hunger-pangs I struggle with daily, I decided to go for an adventure down the tight cobblestone streets. A slight chill and the drizzling rain told me to turn around, but I was committed — I wanted those eats!
As I strolled along the road towards the centre of town with the large beautiful homes keeping me company in the dead of night, I noticed a flash between one of my companions reaching out from the far side of the city-dividing river. I stopped to peek through to see what it was and I thought to myself: cool.
The light rolled along steadily as I continued to get intermittent peeks at the uniqueness that was fully illuminated bike wheels. Before I knew it, the rider and their tricked out wheels were gone and I was still hungry. However, it didn’t take long for the bright lights to usurp my hangry thoughts.
I don’t know why, but I just loved it.
I loved it because there I was, walking alone, thousands of kilometres from home, suddenly not feeling so alone. I loved it because there I was, thinking about this person I’ll never meet, who had no idea that I saw them, and won’t have any idea that I got a sweet smile from their uniqueness. I loved it because I was reminded that we’re all rolling on illuminated bike wheels across the river.
We often don’t think about it, and we often sell ourselves far too short, but we all have far more in common with that night rider than meets the eye. We are all, in our own way, illuminated bike wheels off in the distance in the dead of night. Everything we do, every decision we make, and every step we take is spotted by the unknown wanderers around us.
There is no denying that each and every one of us has influence, makes an impact, and causes a chain reaction of thought in the world around us. You’ll never know who you touch and how it’ll affect them in the days, months, and years to come, but we must all remember this sensitive reality.
You have the power to bring a sweet smile and inspiration to the hungry foreigners on the far side of the river — so embrace your uniqueness and shine bright!
