In Canada we have a lottery called Lotto 6/49. With this particular lottery you get to choose six numbers from one to forty-nine and, depending on how many numbers from your selection match with the one’s drawn by the officials, there are many different prizes to be won. It can be as modest as a Free Play or it could be as grand as the Jackpot, but there are also hefty prizes to be won in between.
The grand prize jackpot starts lower and rises gradually until someone wins the whole shebang and resets the pot. There are many lucky individuals who happen to win after a month or two of no one else taking the cake, which results in a jackpot as large as sixty-four-million, and there are also many lucky individuals who happen to win a more “modest” prize of the entry sum — which is five-million. Both are still grand prize jackpot wins, just simply under different circumstances.
While you need six numbers to claim the grand prize, you only need four numbers to take a 9.5% stake in the Pools Fund. Depending on how many other players also have those lucky four numbers, your prize could range from the low six-figures to a million! I’m sure we can all agree that even though it’s not the jackpot, it’s still quite a win to match those four bad boys! If it was completely down to luck, I’d be more than happy to accept four matching numbers! That being said, if I had to choose between two winning tickets in front of me, with one being a jackpot and the other being a smaller slice of the pot, I’d most definitely take the jackpot. We all would.
The crazy thing is, we all have winning tickets right in front of us and we so often take the one that is worth less. I definitely know that I have and I would bet that you have too at some point. Obviously we are not talking about a government run monetary lottery anymore, but rather the lottery that is God’s plan for us. God’s will for our lives is six numbers of six numbers. It’s a sure thing, an unquestionable win, a jackpot. Yet we so often find ourselves taking only two, three, or four of the numbers He has handed to us and claim less than He desires for us.
Why do we take less than we are entitled to? Why do we accept a win less than what He has given to us? I’d say one big reason is because it is hard to discern what the numbers He has handed to us even are. How do we claim the jackpot when we don’t even know His six numbers? Another reason I believe we pass up on more of His will for us is because it is a great responsibility. As the great poet Notorious B.I.G once said “Mo’ money, mo’ problems.” Well, mo’ given, mo’ responsibility to be entrusted with!
Jesus wants His dreams for you to prevail more than you could ever want them to yourself. He is your number one fan. He wants what’s best for you to come to fruition more than you could ever imagine. He is speaking, we just need to shut out the world and meet our Father in secret solitude. He will speak. He will guide. We won’t hear what our winning numbers are while watching Netflix. We won’t hear what our winning numbers are while our headphones are in. We will hear those winning numbers when we quiet our souls and still ourselves before Him in peace. That’s when we will hear those numbers He has for us and we will be empowered to claim them.
Each of our jackpots will look different. We’ve all been given a different lot in life and been dealt a different hand. Regardless of the scale of your jackpot, it doesn’t change the fact that you have six of six matching numbers waiting to be claimed. It is everything that was meant for you, no less. Why leave God’s goodness on the table when it is all yours for the taking?
You’re a winner.
