I’ve had a few transformational years in my life, as we all have, but there are two in particular that were radically revolutionary to my soul. The first was the year I spent 6 months participating in a Discipleship Training School with Youth With A Mission. Despite being located in Maui, Hawaii, it wasn’t all sunshine or breathtaking rainbows! However, the grittier challenges coupled with the delightful moments was what gave it the very depth that provided such an impactful experience! The second of the two radically revolutionary years for my soul happens to be the one transpiring as I write this.
It was last Summer near the end of my time in Berlin, Germany, that I began to hear Jesus whisper about it. I had this recurring sense that this year wouldn’t be just like any other year. I had a deep conviction in my spirit that this year would be a year of preparation beyond the realms of what is normal. I could never have known then that it would become what it is now, but I knew the water was slowly beginning to heat up — and has it ever begun to boil!
There is little that is more important to progress in life than preparation. Preparation is the act of getting ready. It is the discipline of taking steps day-by-day to ensure that when the moment comes, whenever that may be, you are polished and shining bright. Preparation is the nitty gritty that is done in the shadows of obscurity before the spotlight is turned on. Preparation is the unsung moments that lack aesthetic appeal, but are absolutely imperative to future success.
When I read Jesus’ warning to be aware and awake, for we do not know when the hour is coming that He will return, I see Him warning us to be ready for the second coming. However, I also see Him warning us to be ready, aware, and prepared for the moments when He calls on us to accomplish His will and purposes. “Like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work … “ he expects them to be diligent until the day he returns.
Preparation is rarely easy and preparation will look different to each and every person. We are not all on the same path in life. We are not all being called to the same professions, dreams, or duties. It is reliant on each individual to determine and discern, through Jesus, what they are called to be doing each day and then act out on that. Just remember when the spotlight turns on all of a sudden, you can either be ready to go or you can be caught sleeping on the stage.
The stage itself could be a moment as “small” as being ready to love on someone who desperately needs it or it could be as “big” as being in the limelight of onlookers. If you’re not conscious now of learning and preparing yourself to love more or if you’re not conscious now of practicing for the show, it won’t matter what stage you’re on because both instances involve being caught unready by the Man when He comes calling.
The water of preparation will get hot and it may sting a bit, it may even be excruciating, but the boiling of the water disinfects and purifies the substance before being put towards a greater use.
What do you need to be doing now to pave the way for the future days?
